Cole Blackwater is back. In The Vanishing Track he has teamed up with his best friend and advocate for the homeless Denman Scott to help stop the least fortunate of Vancouver’s residents from being evicted from their low rent hotels to make way for upscale condominiums. When they learn that homeless people are vanishing without a trace from the troubled streets of the Downtown Eastside, they’re investigation leads them straight to one of the city’s most powerful crime bosses.
Working with Vancouver Sun reporter Nancy Webber and street nurse Juliet Rose, Cole and Denman venture into the dark corners of the city’s underworld, and into political corruption at City Hall, to unravel the mystery surrounding the closure one of the city’s landmark Single Room Occupancy hotels – the Lucky Strike.
Cole and his friends find themselves in the middle of a dangerous cabal of city officials, high ranking cops, condo developers and organized crime, as Cole’s failure to confront his own tragic past leads him closer and closer to self destruction. With Cole barreling through the investigation like a run-away train, he and his friends face growing danger as they take on the proponents of the destruction of the landmark hotel.
But everything is not as it seems, and Cole’s penchant for attacking big business and corrupt governments blinds him to what is really happening in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. Can Cole and his friends see past their shortsightedness before more homeless people find themselves on the vanishing track?
